Hester Simpson

Through January 9, Hester Simpson has a painting at the venerable Ricco/Maresca Gallery in Chelsea. “The new gallery space has two sections devoted to showcasing a broad spectrum of what the gallery has been advocating for close to 40 years: the crossover of Self-Taught, Outsider, and Vernacular art into the Modern and Contemporary art arenas,” writes media director Alejandra Russi. “The
viewing room is one of these sections: an ever-changing salon that reflects the past, present, and future directions of the gallery. The viewing room’s current selection of works includes Hester Simpson’s painting Heat, which fluctuates between abstraction and figuration, relating visually to the stylized depictions of natural forms in works by Renaldo Kuhler, Leopold Strobl, and Martín Ramírez—the other artists whose works share the same space.”
